Masonry Restorations

Dixon High School

Dixon Public Schools District 170

Dixon, Illinois

This historically iconic building built in 1929 needed significant investment to remain viable. All work had to be sensitive to the historic character of the building for this $23 million restoration/renovation project. The work was programmed to occur utilizing a multi-phase approach over a two-year period while school remained in session.

Reconstruction of the iconic six-story central tower was a critical facet of the project. In conjunction with the masonry work the windows on the original 1929 building were replaced with energy efficient aluminum windows with a design more in keeping with the original character of the building.

Original decorative plaster surfaces were restored throughout the original building.  The original steam heat system was replaced with a geothermal ground source heating and cooling system. The geothermal system includes 90 wells that are 500 feet deep and are placed under the student and faculty parking lots. Miscellaneous life safety issues throughout the building were addressed.

Additional upgrades include LED light fixtures throughout, creation of a new science lab and replacement of the theater rigging system which was original to the 1929 building.  Finally the main building office was re-oriented to create a new secure entrance to the building.
