GreenAssociates developed a master plan to address Washburne Middle School’s challenges: reorganize the building’s circulation, create a secure entry, improve athletic, musical instruction and lab science space. This complicated addition/renovation project impacted over 70% of the school’s footprint over two years of construction.
A three-station gym was added during Phase I to provide an all-school gathering space. Support spaces include locker rooms, storage area, cardio/kinetic room and dance studio.
During Phase II, two gyms were remodeled to house new science classrooms and band/orchestra rooms. GreenAssociates enclosed a second-story terrace and created a much larger administrative office space at the front of the school.
A two-story glass atrium now brings visitors to the offices and links the north and south wings. Former administrative office space was renovated into specialized areas. The learning resource center’s entry was moved to be more central to the school’s circulation.
Wildflowers bloom on the school’s new green roofs.
